Cuisine/Specialty: Chicago dogs

His rating (out of 10): 8 Vienna beef dogs

Her rating (out of 10): 9 styrofoam cups

Comments:
Know the routine.  It's a Chicago institution with many locations.  The food is exactly the same no matter the address.  But because it's so familiar to so many, if you dilly dally, just step aside and let others pass you as you order.  And for heaven's sake, if you don't know what you want, don't go through a drive thru!  Many times you will be asked to order well before you can even see the menu.  The Italian beef is delightful.  The hot dogs are the gold standard.  The soda is the best -- it's the styrofoam cups and shape of the ice.

Cuisine/Specialty: Mexican

His rating (out of 10): 4 antacids

Her rating (out of 10): 4 bacon tacos

Comments: You'd think that a bacon taco sounds like a genius idea.  You'd think wrong.  While living in Wauconda, we tried just about every mom and pop establishment in town.  This is one we tried once, and never returned.  It was cash only and horribly greasy.

Cuisine/Specialty: Burgers

His rating (out of 10): 8 tailfeathers

Her rating (out of 10): 8 baskets of fries

Comments:
It's a chain, but a local (Gurnee) location recently opened.  I have taken the nieces and nephew a couple times, and also gone without kids.  The food is hot, the burgers delicious, and they know how to handle toddlers.  He had a non-burger in a recent trip and it was also delicious.  Stay away from the cole slaw and opt for the garlic parmesan fries (not on the menu).  But how can you be mad at any place that gives unlimited steak fries?

Cuisine/Specialty: chicken and ribs

His rating (out of 10): 6 spare ribs

Her rating (out of 10): 4 buffets

Comments:  This place is never busy.  There's a reason.

Lakehouse

Cuisine/Specialty: Rotisserie chicken

His rating (out of 10): 7.5 rotisserie spits

Her rating (out of 10): 7 french onion soup crocks

Comments: A hidden gem in northern Lake County.  The specialty is rotisserie chicken, but the whole menu is comfort food and tasty.  The scene is mostly an over 30 crowd, some with their kids earlier in the evening, and many without.
